Shrines are small, interactive objects found throughout the map that reward the player with various bonuses in exchange for an offering, most commonly coins.

Appearance and Behavior

Shrines only spawn in normal rooms, excluding the spawn room on each level. Most rooms spawn with a shrine, but their appearance is not guaratneed.

Once exhausted (which may take multiple inputs), shrines cannot be used again, and will usually glow with a pale fire to indicate they've been used.

Only one shrine of each type will spawn in a given room; occasionally rooms will spawn with multiple shrines, although this is rare.

Shrines, especially secondary rarer shrines, can be located in hard to access places, usually high up on balconies or ledges. While some of these shrines can be reached via creatively jumping from rails, bannisters, mushrooms, etc. having a mobility buff like flying, triple jump, or super speed can help.

Shrines typically behave the same way, but the player's Luck stat can induce other, better outcomes, even from basic shrines.

Normal shrines

Power up shrines

You can offer 1Coins to increase a stat by 1.

Coin shrine

After depositing an unspecified amount of coins, grants loot to the player.

Key shrine

After depositing an unspecified amount of keys, grants loot to the player. If you currently possess the skeleton key, any regular keys you own will be used.

Three chests (shell game)

Three locked chests appear. Two contain flies and the remaining one holds loot.

Slotted Chests

These take the form of small, square chests, with a slot into the front into which a coin is inserted. Upon inserting a coin a random outcome will occur:

  • Bat enemy
  • Coin
  • Key
  • Health potion
  • Armor
  • Random equippable item
  • Ultimate ability book
  • Secondary ability scroll
  • Random weapon
  • Jam

The chest will continue to function until Jammed, in which case the coin will remain in the slot, and no further input will be accepted.

Damocles' sword

Activating it deals 25 damage to the player but grants a coin or a key. Can also rarely contain a max health increase upgrade.

Special interactables

These shrines don't appear in regular rooms.

The dish

Located in Helheim 2. After depositing 100 coins, Giant-Slayer Boots will appear. All subsequent runs will spawn the boots.

Types of Shrines

There are various types of shrines for the player to encounter, with various levels of rarity.

Attribute Shrines

These are the most common shrines, and take the form of statues with small offering bowls. They are easily accessible and usually appear along the peripheral walls of the room. They will accept a single coin in exchange for a +1 boost to the character's stat.

Slotted Chests

These take the form of small, square chests, with a slot into the front into which a coin is inserted. Upon inserting a coin a random outcome will occur:

  • Bat enemy
  • Coin
  • Key
  • Health potion
  • Armor
  • Random equippable item
  • Ultimate ability book
  • Secondary ability scroll
  • Random weapon

The chest will accept a random number of coins until it's "exhausted," at which point the coin will stay half-inserted into the slot, and the chest will accept no further input.

Super Shrines

These shrines take the form of large statues, and will accept a random number of coins or keys in exchange for a random result. The number is usually less than 4. The random results are:

  • +1 Stat
  • Random equippable item
  • Ultimate ability book
  • Secondary ability scroll
  • Random weapon
